Literacy- We will begin our read-aloud book The Boxcar Children.  This classic story of siblings who make a home in an old boxcar has proven to be a favorite of first graders. As we read, we will discuss characters, setting, and plot. Please continue to work on sight words at home. Mastery of those words helps students read more fluently and confidently.

Math- We will learn about place value as we add numbers through twenty. The math tool used to teach place value is Base Ten Blocks. One block is worth ten and a smaller block is worth one. Come and take a look at our "Solve a Snowflake" bulletin board outside!

Bible- January's Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6- "Trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight." We have learned what it means to live out the Bible verse. Next week we will learn what Solomon asked God for, and the example that sets for us.

Science- We are working on our class science project for the Science Fair on January 15th. Our experiment shows us what happens when we water a plant. We focused on a plant experiment, as we will be working more in the garden when it warms up.

 NOTES
-Hopes and Dreams form is due Friday, January 15th. Thank you for your help with this!

-As we begin the second half of first grade, we would like to remind you of the importance of an early and consistent bedtime. Students should be in bed between 7 and 8pm (the latest). Your children need stamina throughout the day; that stamina will be very important as they move on to second grade in the fall. High protein breakfasts and snacks help keep energy up throughout the day. Thank you for your help with this.

-Relaxed dress day is each Friday. Please follow guidelines posted in the Handbook.
