Literacy- We read both fiction and non-fiction texts during reading groups. Students have been enjoying our discussions about the characteristics of both types of writing. During Writing Workshop, we have been taking a closer look at facial details, such as hair style and skin and eye colors. We used mentor texts to help us understand why these details are so important. Students enjoyed browsing books at the Book Fair.

Math- This week we did "goldfish math." Students actually ate goldfish (crackers that is) to help them understand subtraction. Example: "There were 10 fish swimming in a school. A shark came along and ate 7 of them (students eat!) How many fish are left in the school?" We wrote subtraction sentences on white boards to go along with the problem (10-7=3). Next week we will learn about counting on, counting back and fact families.

Bible- October's Bible verse is, "I love you O Lord my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge." Psalm 18:1-2  Next week we will continue with the story of Ruth.

Science- We are ready to put all of the post it notes of what we have learned about box turtles onto our box turtle web! Once we are completely done with the web, we will begin talking about what we want to "specialize" in for our box turtle projects.  The kids are looking forward to creating projects out of useful junk!

 NOTES
As Halloween approaches, please do not send candy for snack or lunch. Much of it is processed in plants with nuts. Save that for a home treat!  Thanks for helping us be a safe environment for students with peanut and tree nut allergies.

-Please return your child's folder each day to school.

-Relaxed dress day is each Friday. Please follow clothing guidelines as listed in the Handbook.

Silly Monsters Invade and Bring Books to Covenant Lower School!!

Many thanks to our 2nd grade families who helped create, volunteer and support a successful 2015 Book Fair!  The students loved the theme and enjoyed the fun, decorated hallway and library that featured silly monsters everywhere!  Special thanks to parents, Nicole Weiss. Kara Watson, Jenny Moore, Dennis Bodenstein and Stephanie Dezio who helped organize volunteers, developed an amazing vision for a silly monster theme, and dedicated countless hours to decorate and create a fun-filled atmosphere to promote reading at Covenant Lower School.

Mrs. Bear would also like to thank Doris VanderMeulen and Pam Beard for the many hours they volunteered to guide and support her through her first Covenant Book Fair!  A follow-up report will be coming to the WAAG in early November to reveal the total Book Fair sales and donations made by our Covenant families to help promote reading at our school. Thank you for your support during our annual book fair at Covenant School.
