LITERACY- We continue to read stories by Kevin Henkes. His books are what we call Mentor Texts because we notice the things that he does as a writer- use punctuation, dialogue, speech bubbles, repetition, etc. We talk about the characters and the lessons they help us learn. As students write their own stories, they will be encouraged to use things in their writing that Kevin Henkes has used. We will learn about nouns this week and go on a noun hunt!
MATH- We will begin learning about number bonds. Number bonds are ways of showing numbers in part, part, whole models. For example, 2, 5 and 7 form a number bond, and 3,4 and 7 form another number bond for 7. We will focus on number bonds to ten. Students will use manipulatives and work in small groups and pairs.
BIBLE- We learned about Baby Moses and next week we will continue to see God's plan for Moses revealed, in God's choosing Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17) is our Bible Verse for the month of September.
SCIENCE- Skills of the Tracker 1 will be our science focus for the first month of school. This unit is written by Chris Hall and it continues in second and third grades. The activities will help students learn how to be more aware and attentive to God's creation all around them. We met our class turtle and named him Tiny Tim! Come see his habitat outside of our classroom window!
