LITERACY- Students  enjoyed our first read-aloud chapter book of the year, The Boxcar Children. We talked about characters, setting, plot, and vocabulary as we read.   Each student wrote about their favorite part of the story.  We've been learning how to plan out our drawing and writing during Writing Workshop. Mentor texts are used to give us examples of this.

MATH-  We introduced place value, as in tens and ones. We have been bundling ten ones to make a ten. Dienes Blocks is the fun math tool we use to teach place value. You can practice at home by giving your child a bunch of straws to count.  Each time she/he gets ten, she/he bundles them and puts a rubber band around them. You could provide a challenge by giving your child a handful of pennies. Have him/her group them into tens and some left over. Exchange the ten for a dime.  Next we will be learning about using "my friend 10" to make it easier to solve problems such as 9+8.

BIBLE-  November's Bible verse is... I love You, O Lord my strength. The Lord is my fortress, my rock and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. Psalm 18: 1-2  We learned about Saul's jealousy of David and Jonathan's friendship with him.We will retell the Thanksgiving story and read Bible verses having to do with being thankful to God.

HISTORY- Ask your children to name the two rivers in Mesopotamia. We will learn about the writing system called cuneiform, ziggurats and Hammurabi's Code of Laws.
