LITERACY- Students are enjoying our first read-aloud chapter book of the year, The Boxcar Children. We talk about characters, setting, plot, and vocabulary as we read. We've been learning how to plan out our drawing and writing during Writing Workshop. Mentor texts are used to give us examples of this.

MATH-  We will introduce place value, as in tens and ones. We will bundle ten ones and make a ten. Dienes Blocks is the fun math tool we use to teach place value. You can practice at home by giving your child a bunch of straws to count.  Each time she gets ten, she bundles them and puts a rubber band around them. You could provide a challenge by giving your child a handful of pennies. Have him group them into tens and some left over. Exchange the ten for a dime.

BIBLE-  November's Bible verse is... I love You, O Lord my strength. The Lord is my fortress, my rock and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. Psalm 18: 1-2    We learned how small David fought Goliath, with great faith, knowing God would help him.We will retell the Thanksgiving story and read Bible verses having to do with being thankful to God.

Don't forget Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes! They are due on Thursday, November 20We pray for each box that comes in, before we stack them out in the front hall.

HISTORY- Ask your children to name the two rivers in Mesopotamia. We will learn about the writing system called cuneiform, ziggurats and Hammurabi's Code of Laws.
