LITERACY- Our first read-aloud chapter book of the year is The Boxcar Children. This classic is enjoyed by students every year. We will talk about characters, setting, plot, and vocabulary as we read. Students loved going to the Book Fair this week.
MATH- Math stations give us practice in things we have already learned. We work on number bonds and fact families, addition and subtraction, patterns, shapes and games that require math strategies. We will be talking about ordinal numbers like fourth, sixth, tenth, this week. For the next few weeks, we'll be working on addition and subtraction through 20.
BIBLE- October's Bible verse is Joshua 1:9, " Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord will be with you wherever you go." This week we will be learning about Samuel.
SCIENCE- We have begun the final phase of our turtle unit, where we will prove our expertise! A few students are writing non-fiction books, and other students have decided to specialize in something relating to box turtles. For example, we have box turtle head specialists, leg specialists, and food specialists. These students are using "useful junk" to make something that represents their expertise. Writing will accompany the projects. Next Friday, we will present our projects to Kindergarten and/or Pre-K.
