LITERACY- Our first week of Literacy groups went very well. Students are being taught according to their abilities. Be sure to spend 15 minutes five days a week (minimum) reading with your child. H/she can read to you, read independently, listen to you read to him/her, or do a combination of the three! A home copy of Word Study words will be in folders on Mondays. Please have your student read and say Word Study words each evening, and write the words as you call them out on Thursdays. We will continue to practice identifying nouns and verbs in sentences.

MATH- We have been writing addition sentences to match our number bonds. For example, we would write 5+3=8 to represent the number bond of 5,3 and 8. Ask your child to figure out the number bonds for 3, 4, 5, all the way up to 10, throughout the coming months.  We also learned about the commutative property this week. For example, 5+3=8 is the same as 3+5=8. We began writing addition stories this week, and we will continue to write them next week. We have been learning different math games, including Rush Hour Jr. and Connect Four. Please watch for a School-to-Home Connections handout in the folder. We will send these home when we begin new units.

BIBLE-
God told Moses to go to the king and tell the king to "let MY people go." We will learn that the king is not willing to do this, and discover God's response. We have begun discussing The Ten Commandments and would like students to memorize them this month.

SCIENCE- Tommy came to school twice this week! Students were able to touch him, watch him eat, and also see how he is able to use his head to flip over from his back to his stomach.  We made a list of what we wonder about box turtles, and next week we will begin reading non-fiction books about box turtles to find the answers to our questions.  At Ivy Creek (Thursday), we will have a chance to attend a talk given by a turtle expert!
