LITERACY- Beginning Monday, your child will be in a small reading group 45 minutes each day, followed by 20-30 minutes of Word Study (spelling/phonics). Be sure to spend 15 minutes five days a week (minimum) reading with your child. H/she can read to you, read independently, listen to you read to him/her, or do a combination of the three! A home copy of your student's Word Study words will be in folders on Mondays. Please practice Word Study words each evening. Now that students have a good understanding of nouns, verbs will be introduced.
MATH- We are learning about number bonds. A number bond is made of parts and a whole. For example, the number bonds for 8 are 5 and 3, 4 and 4, 1 and 7, 6 and 2. We use many manipulatives to show number bonds- cups, straws, colored squares, spoons, "gems" etc. Ask your child to figure out the number bonds for 3, 4, 5, all the way up to 10, throughout the coming months.
BIBLE- God told Moses to go to the king and tell the king to "let MY people go." We will learn that the king is not willing to do this, and discover God's response. We have begun discussing The Ten Commandments and would like students to memorize them this month.
SCIENCE- We have discussed what we know about turtles, read a few books, and have shared any experiences we have had with turtles. Tommy will be coming to the classroom early next week, and we will then observe Tommy and talk about what we wonder about turtles.
