Bible- We will learn how God sent Samuel to Jesse's house to find a new king. This will lead us to David. Our Bible verse for October is Joshua 1:9..."Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord will be with you wherever you go."

History- We will finish up our study of Mesopotamia. Students have enjoyed learning about this ancient civilization. Ask them about ziggurats and Hammurabi! We will soon begin learning about another civilization almost as old as Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt.

Literacy-  We will do some writing about The Boxcar Children, which we will finish reading early in the week. We continue to use mentor texts to teach us about writing, and then try what we've learned from authors, during Writing Workshop.

Math- As we continue with subtracting, find things for your child to subtract at home, and have him/her write a subtraction sentence for it. We use the terms whole and part. A subtraction sentence begins with the whole, and the parts are the number you subtract, and the difference. Work with numbers through 10. Just as reading practice helps reading fluency, math practice leads to math fluency too (quickly knowing addition and subtraction facts through 10.)
