Much of our first week has been spent getting to know each other, in order to build community. We have talked about classroom and school procedures, and classroom and school rules. Students have enjoyed their music, art, Spanish, and P.E. classes.
Bible: This week we talked about what it means to be "third". Students illustrated and wrote about a time they were third. Next week we will begin learning about Moses.
Literacy: Our first author study is Kevin Henkes. We have read and enjoyed a few of his books including Owen, Chrysanthemum, Chester's Way, and My Garden. We've noticed that Kevin Henkes often writes about a character with a problem, and then a solution is found. He has also showed us that writers can use their imagination. After reading Owen, we wrote, illustrated, and shared about something that brings us comfort. Kevin Henkes will teach us a lot about writing in the next few weeks.
Math: We did some activities based on the length of our names. We also practiced counting skills in different centers with partners. Next week we will begin working on comparing numbers with ten frames and forming number bonds.
Writing: Dr. Gaffney came to our class this week to assist Ms. Wilke with a writing workshop. We heard some of Dr. Gaffney's stories and then brainstormed our own idea for a story.
