LITERACY-  Writing Workshop includes a 10-15 minute mini-lesson, on some aspect of writing or drawing. We read books, called mentor texts, which include examples of  our focus that day. We have been learning about drawing people...with different hair, different skin and eye color, different clothes, from the back as well as from the front, doing different things, etc. We try these techniques in our writing, after the mini-lesson. One book we all enjoyed is Roller Coaster, by Marla Frazee. We could look at her illustrations for hours!

MATH-  We have begun math stations! Our math block consists of a short mini-lesson and then math stations. Students work in pairs, visiting 6-8 stations throughout the course of the week. Station work reinforces things we've learned, and gives us practice throughout the year with topics including geometry, addition and subtraction, money, time, measuring. We will introduce solid figures such as the cylinder, cone, sphere, rectangular prism, cube, in the coming week.

BIBLE-  October's Bible verse is Joshua 1:9, " Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord will be with you wherever you go." We will be learning how Rahab helped the Israelites and was repaid for her faithfulness. We will learn about Gideon.

SCIENCE- Our guest turtle expert will join us on Thursday to answer our questions and help us learn more about box turtles! Prior to her visit, we will be adding to our web and reading more non-fiction and fiction books.
